Liquor ban hits poultry, dairy and grocery items sales

Ever since the Supreme Court banned sale of alcohol within 500 metres of national and state highways in March-end, sale of poultry and dairy products and grocery items in the city have dropped to 70%.

The ban has hit around 100 hotels restaurants, spilling over to trades associated with hospitality industry.

The business of poultry farms supplying chickens to hotels has dropped drastically. Paramjit Poultry, one of the largest suppliers of poultry products in the city, has witnessed a 70% dip.

Jatinder Singh, Owner, Paramjit Poultry, said, "On an average, we used to supply 50 chickens daily to a hotel. The figure now has come down to 10 to 12."

Sales of grocery items -packed snacks, beverages and cooking supplies have dipped up to 60%.

The ban has also hit dairy products sale. Sunpreet Singh of Guru Nanak Dairy said, "The overall losses due to the ban are around 60%. The orders of dairy products placed by hotels have come down drastically."
