Panels to review subsidy food served at Parliament: Govt

In the midst of a controversy over the heavily-subsidised food served at the Parliament canteens, a panel of MPs who looks after food management in the Parliament complex will discuss if the subsidy should continue or not.

This was disclosed by committee chairman A P Jithender Reddy.

As most of the items which are served in the Parliament canteens are priced low, compared to market rates.

The 15-member meeting of the committee on food management has been an agreement at the customary session-eve meeting of party leaders, called by Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on 20th July to decide the whole gamut of pricing, subsidy, quality and serving of the food.

Sources said that a majority of committee members were in support of scrapping the subsidy as MPs consumed not more than 10 per cent of the food supplied by the railway catering units, while the rest was taken by Parliament House staff, security personnel and journalists.

The argument is also erupted after an RTI query revealed that during the last five years canteen facility received a total subsidy of Rs 60.7 crore.
